dd-wrt - DNS resolution fails after enabling Log Management

Hi All,

I have a NetGear R7000 running DD-WRT v3.0-r32170M kongac (06/11/17).  I am currently sending traffic down OpenVPN to ExpressVPN.

I want to enable Log Management, but each time I turn it on my router "freezes".  By freeze, I mean that clients connected to the router can not perform any DNS resolution.  When I disable Log Management, functionality returns after a few minutes.

If there is a better place to post this, please let me know!

File playback on android box freezes when downloading files?

Hello, 

 

I am currently running an R7000 with the kong firmware and smb to a 2 bay hard drive dock. Everything works perfect until during playback it freezes if i am downloading larger files. Has anyone else had this problem and any idea if there is a tweak or setting that might correct it?

R7000 still bricked after firmware upload

My R7000 was bricked.  Following the excellent advice on this forum, I have been able to upload the firmware file using a USB/serial cable, putty/tftp and the transfer apparently worked - "transfer successful".  After this the router seemed to be re-booting (activity in putty console) but ends up simply cycling round as it did before, implying the flash was actually NOT successful.  I've tried different firmware versions each with apparent success but none actually truly successful.  Any ideas?

There are vaious nasty looking lines (to my un-trained eye) in the putty console report, things like this (this is just a small selection):

WGET and HTTPS

Hi all,

I try to use HMA vpn with my R7000 dd-wrt flashed with last release (june 17) and I receive an error with wget command used to configure it.

Effectivly, the WGET command does not support HTTPS which is unfortunalty the URL given by HMA to manually install the vpn.

Any ideas to give this https feature to WGET ?

Hi,

I've been working with this mod for about a month now and have had too many problems. I've been able to get some basic function working. Basic wireless AP and openVPN client seem to be working. But I don't know how stable they are - I can't get the features I want to work. This was so frustrating that I bought a R7000 and installed Shiby Tomato to get my basic needs.

In this mod I found that the mount points for an USB thumbdrive are read only. I tried to set this router up as a repeater and many of the pages wouldn't save - ie: make changes to a page, press save and refreash. The changes were not saved. I could learn how to do it all command line but it makes it feel like I'm at work.

This mod basically works but in my opinion the OEM NetGear firmware is better because it supports the GigaBlast connection that I have from COX and supports all the features that this mod does.

I'll wait for the Tomato mod that supports the 1G connection and, hopefully MU-MIMO.

Stock and Kong on R7000 - Plex not working, any ideas?

I've been going in circles trying to get Plex working - I have the server on Win 10, I can connect and play videos by browser and Samsung SmartTV but I can't get my PS4 to play content. The PS4 will show the libraries, cover art and description but won't play the video (I get a black screen then an 'undefined error' messge).

Why am I posting this here? In breaking down the problem I connected the PS4 via cable to the same switch that the WIn10 machine is on - it works 100%, video and audio files play immediately with no issues, so I know my Plex server and PS4 are working OK. If I go to Wi-Fi or wired LAN on another floor in the house that is routed through the R7000 it won't play the video/audio file. I'm using Channel Master Ethernet over cable boxes on every floor to link everything - they have been rock solid for a few years. I don't suspect them, but they are in circuit when I use Wi-Fi of connect on another floor in the house.

With the stock firmware I tried Port Forwarding and ensuring the Win 10 system has a set IP address. An upgraded to the current Netgear firmware. Then I tried DD-WRT Kong V3.0-r32170m (latest release) and the PS4 will not play any media.

Are there any know issues with DD-WRT and routing UPnP traffic? Any other ides/area to check before going back to tsock and then Tomato?

DD-WRT GUI settings don't match CLI

Hello...I am trying to do something very basic in setting up port based vlans as outlined in this article.

Here is how my GUI is setup.

  

I need port 1 and ports 2-4 to be on separate VLANs with filtering so that only outbound and return traffic can leave and enter those VLANS.   

Here is what the CLI shows

I would expect the output to be

In the end, this is what I want to accomplish
 
1) Device connected to port 1 on back of the router to only have Internet access and traffic leaving and returning to that vlan (vlan2). all other traffice denied/dropped.
2) Devices connected to ports 2-4 on the back of the rounter to have access to each other (VLAN3) , the Internet wireless devices (see steps 2 and 3 below).
3) Private Wifi in same VLAN (VLAN3) as ports 2-4 with access to those devices and the Internet.
4) Guest Wifi with only access to and from the Internet. 
 
I got as far as getting the physical ports configured as shown in the GUI.  I am able to communicate on the separate vlans/subnets (with fixed ips as desired). I put in some iptables rules which did not prevent access from VLAN2 to VLAN 3 and vice versa.  
 
I noticed that the GUI keeps forcing port 1 to be in the LAN bridge too. 
 
Is there a hardware schematic for the layout of the R7000 similar to this one.  
 
 

R7000 tomato attempt not working - cannot see router after initial Tomato flash

Hi. I bought a Netgear R7000 Nighthawk with DD-WRT pre-installed. It worked well. I wanted to try tomato because of a few features that it had over DD-WRT. Specifically the dual OpenVPN connections that could be stored as I use Amazon Prime and Netflix and my VPN uses different servers for each service. I love the idea of just switching back and forth on the router without having to backup and reboot all the time.

I was told to flash from DD-WRT to tomato. It did work but suffice it to say, there were small issues - no static DNS server settings available, VPN services would not start. Not everything seemed to be working correctly. I decided to do it the correct way after finding the Shibby Tomato site. So I followed the instructions there up until flashing the initial tomato firmware. After flashing the initial tomato firmware, I could not find my router. I get a connection issue at 192.168.1.1. The router, however, seems happy. It has regular light patterns and my connected computer is flashing away on its wired connection. Have I bricked it or is it just at a different address? I have tried 'resetting' it, but I guess I'm a bit unsure as to exactly what 'resetting' means. I have held down the reset button in the back with a pencil for 1, 5, 30+ seconds at a time but the router never seems to power cycle, it just keeps blinking away seemingly happily.

So, my questions. Does the router need to be reset a few times for it to come back to me? If so, what, exactly, do I need to do to reset it? I believe I am on the initial Tomato firmware and if I could access it, I could continue and flash the full AIO firmware.

I did purchase a USB-TTL cable just in case (but my initial attempt at accessing the router via COM is not working - cannot find that MINICOM is installed (Fedora Cinnamon Linux), having difficulty using puTTY, etc).

100% NEWBIE -Help or Idea

Never before I have ever done anything like this. I am hoping that this is where I need to be. I am hoping that somewhere on here someone can help me. I have no idea where to even begin I have a Nighthawk R7000v2. On our old router some slick person was stealing our internet and using it for illegal downloads and at one point we got a letter from our ISP.

Due to living situations that I'm not getting into and my own concerns and preferences. I would like to be to lock the Security Tab in the Router with a secondary password, so that even if they have the router password they need my secondary security password to change any setting in there. Hell if I could get better parental controls and individual traffic logs while we are at it that would be great. But I am sure that is just a pipe dream for me. When I was being sold on this new router I was told these were all upgraded with new and better options that my old router. The only difference is now I can use remote login on the Genie App on my phone:/

I dont know where to take my idea if it doesn't exist or if its even possible, but the point is to set up a secondary password via email and you could even select the tabs you want the lock to effect. Then if the router is reset - you know to kick off the parental controls or power outage, the settings can only be reset for those locked tabs with the password override. They would basically cause the default status to be what is locked by password instead of factory. And the only way to get the password would be through the email address. In case someone forgets their password.

Sorry if this is in the wrong neighborhood.

I need a samba version up to 3.6 , for the moment i try advanced tomato but samba is 3.0.37...

Can someonr tell me if there are a open firmeware that have the samba >= 3.6 ? or if i can install it via some shh command?

iptables rules incorrect for router mode

Using: DD-WRT Kong Mod for NETGEAR R7000 (2017-06-11)

My ADSL modem cannot work in Bridge mode, and I want to avoid double-NAT (i.e. router does NAT and modem does NAT).

So, I've set the router into Router mode (Setup -> Advanced Routing -> Operating Mode = Router).

It turns out the iptables rules are incorrect.  Specifically the FORWARD chain:

The DROP rule at the bottom catches incoming packets from the modem and drops them.
 
Removing the DROP rule fixes the problem, but I'll write back with an alternative once I figure out a more secure alternative (if required.)
 

Clean internal flash not working.

I'm trying to put some jffs scripts in the internal flash memory, but it shows zero of 22 MB available. I used the Clean Internal Flash Storage function, but it does not free the memory. Any suggestions? Is there a way I can do this through CLI instead?

R7000v2? Unable to install from .chk

After buying an r6700 and finding out that it was v2, I returned it and got an R7000. Which also turns out to be a v2. Any chance there's support for v2 for R7000 anywhere? I can't seem to find it in any of the forums. 

I was going to try the original tomato/ddwrt firmware for the R7000, but the firmware upgrade only accepts .img and not .chks.

Is kongs v3.0-r32170M able to install torrent(transmission)? i may just be screwing it up on the directory side but any help would be appreciated! I'm also running into issues where the repositories are unreachable

Partial initial flash

Not sure how but I am stuck a the initial tomato firmware with no options to go further.

 

Scenario:

Running Advanced Tomato, flashed back to ofw (all is well), upgraded genie then flashed tomato-R7000-initial.chk

Now i am stuck.  I can telnet and winscp but can not successfully tftp or tftp2 (from netgear site).  Can I manually send the firmware over via WinSCP and continue somehow?  

 

 

I can't post images .... so this is the best I can do. The config page is clickable but nothing can be done Save/Cancel.

Flashing using the genie app?

Hello,

I have a question about if i can flash my, never been set up, nighthawk R7000 with the kong mod of dd-wrt not using the netgear genie app? i have read through so many articles, forums, etc.. Some say I can, but most say "using the genie app".  Please advise, all comments will be appredciated, as i have not been programming an such for the last 10 years. I am using Linux Ubuntu OS.
